About Us - History

Mission Statement: Scruggs Lumber is dedicated to providing our customers with a caring and reliable source for products, information and services that are associated with the building industry. We are one of Mid-Missouri's oldest family owned and operated business' and Jefferson City's oldest lumber company. We were built on a reputation of trust, hard work, good service and quality products. It's nice to know that some things never change. You'll still find the same friendly atmosphere that started the company more than 84 years ago. We consider our customers our friends and call them by name when they visit our store.

The firm was founded on May 1, 1919, when Clifford Scruggs and Henry Guhleman purchased the Geo. Hope Lumber Company.

Through the years, Scruggs Guhleman Lumber Co. had locations in numerous Mid-Missouri communities.

After the deaths of the founders, John C. Scruggs, Clifford’s son, directed the growth of the company for more than 30 years until his death in 1994.

The company is now managed by John's son, Robert.

The Scruggs family tradition of helping and servicing the building industry in Mid-Missouri now includes a fourth generation with Bob's children, Chris and Stephanie.
